Why I wont be at #smbmsp tomorrow.
Aug 27th
One of the first events that I went to when I started in the world was SMBMSP. Since that trip out to Bloomingtion, over a year ago, I have attended almost every one, met tons of cool people, and learned a lot.
However, I have noticed a trend recently. The content has shifted from a fairly expert discussion on social media amoung people who live and breathe it to what I have taken to calling “Social Media 101″, and the goal seems to have switched from ferreting out the details of social media to teaching a rather large, and unwieldy, group of people.
Dont get me wrong, you all are great people. However, it is hard to justify taking a half-day of work for a social gathering at the state fair.
I dont think that the goal should be to have the biggest SMB in the nation, or only focus on the coolest events. I think that it should be to have the best content. Maybe have two tracks, or splinter off a SM Advanced type of group. Either way, I feel that we have moved away from the roots.

My Birthday
Aug 20th
As some of you may know, my birthday is coming up. The big 21, the day that I wont have to be worried about getting kicked out of TechKaroeke, and the day I retire the “Im 20, so dont by me a drink later” bit from my presentations.
If you want to join in the festivities, here are the deets:
Day: Sept. 19th, 2009
Time:
6:00pm Dinner and Sake at Moto-i
8:00pm Cigars and drinks at Golden Leaf in St. Paul
From there, we will decide where to go next. Watch my Twitter feed on that night for the full plan.
If you are tweeting about this, the hastag is #mphis21, and the same tag will be used on Flickr.

Thoughts on Long Distance
Aug 19th
This post may seem like a departure from what I have been talking about recently.
My girlfriend, Jessica, was supposed to leave for the Navy Monday. After several days of saying goodbye, we found out that she will be here till late September. (Thankfully, she leaves after my birthday!!)
We spent several nights talking about how to make this work with her gone. During boot camp, we will only be able to communicate via snail mail.
Yes, someone with a Blackberry and a Mac glued to him of all times, will be writing letter.
Thankfully, that is only for 8 weeks. After that, we will have many other options to communicate. Travel, phone, email, facebook, and any other ways that we can think of.
This will be my first real long distance attempt. It will be tough, but it will also be worth it. Thankfully, I have some great friends who have made this work, and have been or will be giving me tips on how to make this all work.
New Business MN presentation
Aug 13th
I had my second social media workshop for New Business Minnesota yesterday. It was a great time, and I met a ton of awesome small business owners.
Jessica was kind enough to take some pictures for me:
Here are my slides from the preso:
