My thoughts on the iPad
By, now, you should know Apple has launched their iPad.
It will be out in a few months. And I will be saving up for one.
Why, you might ask?
First, it fills a true need for me. There are quite a few times that I wish I had something smaller and faster than my MacBook, yet with a bigger screen than my phone.
Now, this is normally a tablet or a netbook niche. If the iPad was more expensive, I would not be caring.
However, I am SO willing to pay $500 for a device that really fills a need.
Needs that it will fill:
- Surfing the web while watching TV
- Having an internet device at client meetings without a screen between us
- iBook reader (if they do textbooks on it, I am so in)
- Mobile, computerized whiteboard (I am fairly spacial, so I need this)
- Movies/Pandora (since I dont have a TV, I need something like this for a good movie experience in my dorm)
- Better mobile email (again, smartphones suck at this, and my MacBook is a bit too much when just killing a few
Basically, I want a media consumption device. I feel like the iPad is exactly that for me, with a bit more.
What are your thoughts on it?
p.s. as far as the name, I can see why people hate it, and I can see why Apple did it. iPod, iPhone, iPad…
I will not comment on the name, because it is the thing I care about the LEAST with the device. Really, deciding on it because of the name?
p.p.s. In the future, posts like this will go on my new gadget blog, which will launch next month. I can only handle launching one at a time

I’m curious if you’d be happy with just the $499 iPad? 16GB wouldn’t be enough for me and I’d want 32GB minimum, and if I had one, I’d want to use it on the road, so then I’m already looking at $729. If it suits your needs, then I guess it’s the right piece of technology for you. So far I haven’t heard anything about word on the notifications, multitasking and phone calls. I also don’t have $500-$800 to burn, so I’ll just sit back and wait for a friend to let me play around with theirs

It is a pretty impressive piece of technology. I want to buy it but I can’t seem to justify it. My 13″ mac book pro is small enough that I’m not bothered to carry it around. What do think about typing on it? Seems a little challenging…

Since I have an iPod, an iPod touch, and my Macbook, I dont really need all the storage. I have been thinking about getting a netbook, so we shall see if playing with this changes my mind. I also dont really need 3G, since I have a MiFi, and WiFi EVERYWHERE I go it seems-home, school, work, cafe…
However, like you, I have to play with one first
